University Admissions Tests
If you apply for a course that requires an admissions test, you’ll need to check the registration deadline for the test, when you will sit it, and what it includes, as well as the deadline for your UCAS application.
Many courses that require you to sit a test have a 15 October deadline, but your course may be different, so it’s important you check key dates and deadlines. To see if your course requires you to sit an admissions test, check the course description in the search tool.
Most admissions tests happen between August and November the year before you're due to start your studies – some even earlier, before you’ve sent your UCAS application!
Remember to check the date of your admissions test – some take place before the UCAS application deadline. More information on the UCAS site here.

Advice from Cambridge University for their admissions tests is as follows:
Anyone offering a paid service to help you pass your admissions test(s) will have no more knowledge than someone who has read this website and studied past papers. So while your performance at any test will improve with some familiarisation or practice, we would not advise you to pay for such help.

This short video is official advice about how best to go about preparing to sit the UCAT. It shows the tools available to help you and suggests a rough timeline for you.

UCAT v BMAT - which one to take - different medical schools require different exams
- The general advice is that all medical and dental applicants should take the UCAT, as you will receive your results before applying so you can then make the decision as to whether to apply to UCAT medical schools based on your mark. This means that there’s really nothing to lose from taking the UCAT.
- Taking the BMAT exam carries more risk if the university that you’re applying to requires you to take it in October, as you will have applied before taking the exam. However, the BMAT is a good alternative if you have not achieved a high enough score in the UCAT, or, if your truly want to study at the BMAT medical schools to which you’ve applied.
